This role within the administrative team in Emergency Department is to support the smooth running of the department. The role will assist the clinical staff on the shop floor by managing the flow of patients through the department. The role will report to the ED Management Team for all managerial matters. The post holder will be responsible for monitoring, maintaining and updating Medway with regards to patient flow within the ED. This monitoring should include, but is not limited to, Majors, fit2sit area, Resus, Urgent Care, Paediatric ED, with waiting times and pressure areas within the department overall. The post holders will attend the daily nursing and medical handovers and participate in the ED safety huddles. The role will also ensure breaches of the 4 hour standard are monitored and escalated to the Nurse in Charge, Medical Controller and Service Manager as required. Correct breach reasons must always be entered for all breach discharges and this role will be responsible for ensuring this is always adhered to. The post holder will form a key part of the daily operational management of the department and as so will be jointly responsible for ensuring the ED Escalation policy is followed and departmental pressures are escalated as appropriate using the policy. The post holder will also liaise with external organisations as required; for example with the London Ambulance Service and the Mental Health Liaison Team regarding operational pressures and patient plans.
Attend the ED handover meetings and review/discuss issues raised from the medical handover. Attend the Safety Huddles to proactively manage breach reasons and escalate to divisional representatives as required. Monitor total number of patients in the ED department Monitor waiting time to be seen. Ensure breaches are monitored in real-time by the NIC and Consultant and escalate ALL patients over 3 hours without a clear plan in place. Ensure the number of breaches and breach reasons are recorded accurately if not validate and correct on PAS. Upcoming potential breaches and plan to address to be closely monitored Ensure potential 12 hour breaches are escalated to Site, Divisional Lead and Chief Operating Officer accordingly. Support ambulance offloads occur within 15 minutes and plan in place if exceeding this time frame. Escalate delays in inter-professional standards. Escalation as required and follow up on reasons / actions to address delays. Assist in monitoring and raising awareness of improved clinical. documentation, management plans, clerking, and completing NEWS and Sepsis on the Major’s screen. Assist in monitoring and raising awareness for Speciality doctors to liaise with NIC on arrival, NIC to note arrive time, and Speciality doctor to communicate management plan to nurse looking after the patient and NIC and to notify NIC as soon as possible if patient requires admission.

Ensure the number of breaches and breach reasons are recorded accurately if not validate and correct on PAS. Share learning opportunities with staff to improve accuracy of recoding accurate data. Upcoming potential breaches and plan to address to be closely monitored Ensure potential 12 hour breaches are escalated to Site, Divisional Lead and Chief Operating Officer accordingly. Support ambulance offloads occur within 15 minutes and plan in place if exceeding this time frame. Escalate delays in inter-professional standards. Support formal nursing and medical handovers occur as allocated times as per MC and NIC SOPs. Support regular board rounds with the NiC and MC as required. Assist AAU/AEC with facilitating a ‘pull model’ for patients with expected admissions. Escalation as required and follow up on reasons / actions to address delays. Assist in monitoring and raising awareness of improved clinical. documentation, management plans, clerking, and completing NEWS and Sepsis on the Major’s screen. Assist in monitoring and raising awareness for Speciality doctors to liaise with NIC on arrival, NIC to note arrive time, and Speciality doctor to communicate management plan to nurse looking after the patient and NIC and to notify NIC as soon as possible if patient requires admission.
