Job overview

Are you enthusiastic, self-motivated, flexible, reliable and well organised? Can you work equally well independently or as part of a team? Can you using your own initiative to solve day-to-day problems? Then consider a move to the Decontamination Services Department’s (DSD) friendly and hardworking team.

Are you passionate about patient safety and would like to work for high quality decontamination services department at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust that delivers excellent quality patient care?

Are you interested in developing your knowledge in the decontamination and sterilisation of surgical instruments field?

Main duties of the job

Decontamination Services Department (DSD) is responsible for providing sterile services to five of the hospitals that comprise the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The Department is run to the highest standards and is accredited to Medical Device European Directive 93/42/EEC, ISO 13485:2016. DSD is located in a large, state of the art, purpose built facility on the Oxford Road Site.

As a DSD Technician you’ll undertake the decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilisation and distribution of medical devices (surgical instruments) for operating theatres and departments across the Oxford Road site, as well as to its outside customers. You’ll also ensure that the service is provided efficiently and in accordance with the Department’s policies, procedures and Quality Management System.

Whilst no specific qualifications are required, a background in sterile services would be useful, but is not essential as we provide a comprehensive induction and ongoing training programme.  You’ll need to be reasonably fit too, as the role involves manual handling, walking and standing activities. What’s more, you must be able to follow procedures in a production environment, have effective communication skills, a conscientious and methodical approach to work and the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To find out more about the key responsibilities and the specific skills and experience you’ll need, take a look at the Job Description & Person Specification attachments under the ‘Supporting Documents’ heading.   So that you’re even more equipped to make an informed decision to apply to us, you’ll need to take time to read the ‘Candidate Essentials Guide’ that sits with the Job Description and Person Specification.  This document provides you with details about the Trust, our benefits and outlines how ‘we care for you as you care for others’.  Most importantly, it also contains critical information you’ll need to be aware of before you submit an application form.
