Job overview

The Digital Innovation Engineer will support the design, production and delivery of a variety of innovation projects benefiting the trust through the Digital Futures Lab.

The resources developed with be utilised by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust staff, patient groups, community hospitals, care home, staff from our One Devon partners as well as external organisations.

As well as providing enhancements in patient care, the role will be a key role in developing digital skills and adoption across our workforce.

Main duties of the job

  • The Digital Futures team’s aim is to develop new and innovative products and solutions to enhance both education & training (including simulation), research outcomes, and service improvement at the Trust. This often includes development of applications, prototypes & packages in a range of technology areas, including XR tech, AI, app development, 3d scanning, as well as new and emerging tech sectors. In the context of this role this will include primarily working on a collaborative basis with the team – providing input on design creation and specifically programming skills to enable the continued creation and development of project outcomes – both internal and external funded projects. The role will support the adoption of Digital Skills in both Acute and Community sites as to drive digital transformation.
  • The Digital Innovation Engineer will fulfil the following needs.Produce content for the digital innovation lab for a range of appropriate devices as directed by the Digital Innovation Lead.Develop and then provide technical expertise and advice in the use of digital technology.
  • Support the development of digital technology solutions for research, education and training across the organisation with a specific focus on driving digital transformation within communities’ site.
  • Apply digital technologies for the benefit of staff, patients and patient families. This will include assisting the design, development, testing and delivery of innovation research projects.

Communication and working relationships •    Work within and supporting the Digital Futures team in working towards objectives, project deadlines and innovation outcomes. •    Liaises with a number of staff groups, potential stakeholders and clients in relation             to Digital Innovation across the trust, particularly around XR Technologies. •    Attend meetings, via MS Teams, internal to the organisation to discuss work and             Projects that the digital innovation team is supporting. •    Day to day contact with a variety of staff, service users and partners. •    May be a point of contact for the innovation lab (Digital Futures team), for example a project request comes into the digital futures email inbox. •    Act as an ambassador for digital innovation and development across the trust with support of the team •    Assist DF team members to provide advice, guidance, encouragement and support on the use of technology to staff involved in facilitating a wide and expanding spectrum of digital adoption.

Analytical and judgement •    Works alongside but with direction from the Digital Innovation Lead  •    Responsible for delivering projects to agreed timescales and supporting other             Innovation projects where required •    Design, produce, test and deliver effective digital outcomes using industry standard tools (Unreal Engine, Unity, 3D Vista) •    Provides advice, guidance, encouragement and support on the use of             technology and created applications to staff involved in utilising products •    Ensures regular communication with team around workload and any conflicting             priorities •    Supported by senior members of the team whilst undertaking any additional             learning to support role. •    Be aware of Trust priorities and help support our vision as the Trust as a digital             health trailblazer. •    Support the development of any T-level industry placements within the team

Planning and organisation •    Support direction to Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust in the             promotion, understanding, managing, researching, support or application of             digital interventions and technologies •    Assist in the development and facilitation of innovation projects by taking and             interpreting briefs from both team lead and interfacing with             relevant staff groups. •    Assist with monitoring project progress and working towards deadlines. •    Maintain, update and prepare devices, prior to going out to departments/staff, to             ensure smooth rollout of application. •    Maintain own calendar and schedule that compliments and supports the Digital Futures Team •    Actively keep abreast of developments within the digital landscape

Physical skills •    Ability to use, carry and set up a range of technology and equipment

Patient and client care

  • This role will have occasional contact with patients as the projects developed with this role will in many cases be patient facing projects. Contact with patients with be with clinical supervision and guidance. •    The role will involve in designing and implementing digital interventions for patient care which will clinically supervised. •    This is a non-clinical role and does not have responsibility for any aspects of patient care other than provide and support digital resources through the supervision of an appropriate clinician.

Policy and service development •    Requires awareness and understanding of Trust policies and values for interacting             and representing digital team within the role. •    Be respectful and sensitive towards intellectual insight and intellectual property             that the role may be exposed to working on certain projects and within the R&D             aspect of the wider digital team •    Positively promote the work of the Trust with external clients, stakeholders and             partners •    Responsible for digital equipment and software licenses used to fulfil the role.

Finance, equipment and other resources •    Assist the Digital Innovation Lead as needed to maintain equipment, software & technical infrastructure for the service to remain functional. •    Assist access and correct operation of digital technologies as part of the Digital Futures team. •    Does not have budgetary responsibility.

People management and training •    You will be required to show initiative and ability to make progress on projects independently, but with regular catch ups and oversight from Digital Innovation Facilitator. •    You will be required to support new T-level placements, through skills and knowledge exchange as well as supporting admin tasks. •    You will be proactive and keen to help shape the future direction and theme of the digital health service, with genuine opportunity for growth and innovative thinking.

Information technology and administrative duties •    Looking after own IT and digital equipment •    Recording working hours, calendar, achievements and outcomes  •    Looking after software licenses specific for the role & identifying additional tools             which could improve the service •    Knowledge of the use of core digital production software (Unreal Engine, Unity, Xcode, Arduino, etc) •    Keep abreast of new and emerging digital technology

Research and development •    This role may be asked work to support research-based activities through the Technologies Research Programme Manager to include publications as needed.

Freedom to act  •    The role will require some autonomy in terms of creative and design decision making but will be managed by the Digital Innovation Lead
