Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Dental Health Support Worker to join the Designed to Smile Team in Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB.

You will be based at Glanrhyd Hospital. This post will be 28 hours per week, 8.30 - 4pm.TERM TIME ONLY.  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to work as part of the Designed to Smile team assisting the Oral Health Improvement Practitioner in implementing and monitoring the supervised tooth brushing programme in schools and pre-schools in Cwm Taf  Morgannwg UHB.  You will be required to have the ability to prioritize your workload which will involve carrying out administrative tasks including data collection using  computer software packages. The role also requires the post holders to deliver and collate parental consents, and to  monitor and order oral health resources.

The post holder will be required to  have a flexible approach as the role involves travelling daily between sites visiting schools and pre-schools throughout all localities in Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB and communicating with parents, educational staff and other health professionals.

You will be required to travel  between sites and may be required to drive CTMUHB vehicles.

Main duties of the job

  • To support the Oral Health Improvement Practitioner engage with targeted groups and educational/childcare settings to deliver ‘Designed to Smile’ Oral Health Improvement Programme line with WHC (2017) Number 23 Refocusing of the Designed to Smile child oral health improvement programme.
  • To develop and maintain good working relationships and communication with all stakeholders including families, health professionals, dental teams and educational and childcare establishments.
  • To communicate with parents and education staff to gain consent for participation in Designed to Smile Oral Health Programmes.
  • Communicate routine information requiring tact and diplomacy, overcoming barriers to understanding where parents/carer have physical, medical and mental health conditions who may be emotional and/or upset.
  • To work closely with and take direction from the OHIP to deliver resources and carry our quality assurance checks /monitor the OHP activities within the Designed to Smile Oral Health Programme.
  • To be involved in Health Promotion initiatives such as promotional events, study days and patient related activities, under the direction of the supervising OHIP.
  • To support the OHIP staff with administrative duties including all associated paperwork, forms and data collection necessary to support the Designed to Smile programme.
