Maternity Leave Cover, Fixed Term /Secondment for One Year.
We are looking for a Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse on the Oncology Day Case Unit which is a level 3 POSCU. The post holder will be a skilled nurse and role model in the care of children and young people attending the unit with an oncology diagnosis. This will involve the administration of chemotherapy, supporting of families and working alongside the medical ward staff to care for the patients when they require inpatient treatment. The unit is open monday-friday between the hours of 9-5 and
treats patients between the ages of 1-19 years, sharing care with The Royal Marsden and Great Ormond Street Hospitals.
Main duties of the job
- As a member of the multi-disciplinary team provides the highest standard of patient care for children with oncology conditions and their families.
- Contributes to the smooth and efficient running of the Unit .
- Models excellent practice in the administration of intravenous chemotherapy and in the use of a variety of vascular access devices .
- Prioritises care and delegates duties to others as appropriate ensuring they are supervised and mentored.
- Continues to develop own knowledge and skills through locally agreed personal development plans and facilitates the development of others.
- Participates in change management and clinical audit within own area of work.
- Works in partnership with other agencies.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Address the needs of individuals to bring about improvement in the health and well-being of children through the delivery of evidence-based care.
- Manages a designated group of children.
- Model excellent practice through effective assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
- Articulate and discuss source of evidence on which care is based.
- Articulate the decision making process underlying the management of own and others time and the patient workload.
- Use available technology, child’s record and parent/carers knowledge to identify changes in the condition of the child and initiate appropriate action whilst reporting changes to the appropriate individual. Able to problem solve relating to vascular access devices.
- Demonstrate how they have enabled child/carers to participate as partners in care activities.
- Initiate and develop plans for health promotion with individuals involving parents/carers and multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrate involvement with the multi-disciplinary team.
- Has knowledge of the needs of all children in specialist area and is able to communicate their needs to other members of the multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams.
- Recognition of organisational and clinical needs that may affect the area in which they work. Uses expert theory knowledge to enhance patient care.
- As an expert practitioner uses evidence based practice to enhance patient care.
- Provide support and advise to other nursing staff about the needs of children whose condition is thought to be unstable or deteriorating.
