Job overview

Lung Cancer Screening (LCS) is a new and ground-breaking programme of work in England which will contribute to the ambition of the NHS Long Term Plan to improve early diagnosis of lung cancer and survival for those diagnosed with lung cancer.

NHSE has recently confirmed that the LCS programme will become a new national screening programme. The programme is being offered to those most at risk of developing lung cancer, people aged 55 to 74 year old who have ever smoked. We are seeking to recruit an experienced nurse to join the team during this exciting period of expansion of the programme across South East London.

Main duties of the job

  • Preparation for weekly SRM (Screening Review Meeting)
  • Attendance of SRM, note taking
  • Action referrals from SRM, internally and to other trusts throughout South East London
  • Telephone clinics, including breaking bad news
  • Preparing and sending letters to patients and GPs
  • Updating private providers records
  • There may be occasional rotation to the respiratory outpatients departments at Guys & St Thomas'
  • Deputise for Responsible Assessor/CNS in their absence:  completing quarterly and annual audits answering clinical queries from private provider clinical oversight of nurses working with provider audits of provider attending meetings with stakeholders audits of excluded patients support admin team with clinical queries including tracking of cancer patients

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Deputy Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Lung Cancer Screening programme is a key role working with patients, clinicians, and other partners, to implement the Lung Cancer Screening Programme across South East London. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with clinicians and stakeholders across the boroughs of Southwark, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham, Bromley and Bexley to ensure patients are referred in a timely manner. You will be involved in community engagement as we work to spread the word about the screening programme and ensure access to the service for all who are eligible.

We are seeking an experienced nurse who is highly motivated and has a passion for early diagnosis. You will need to have relevant clinical experience,  be able to demonstrate a collaborative working style, have a passion to develop an evolving services and be agile in meeting deadlines whilst prioritising tasks and workloads in an ever changing service.  We are seeking a patient centred individual with excellent communication skills who can demonstrate compassion and a desire to deliver excellent care in line with our trust values.
