  • To ensure the efficient smooth running of all Sedation/GA lists and pre-assessment clinical sessions for Coventry & Warwickshire Community Dental Service.
  • To be the primary lead and responsible nurse at all GA / Sedation sites across the county, ensuring on a rotational basis, appropriate coverage, continuity and best practice standards at all times.
  • To support Clinicians in the specialist Dental Service to provide high quality dental care for a wide range of patients with complex specialist needs, including medically compromised conditions, tolerance and access difficulties.
  • To be adaptable and perform all duties at all sites, and to work flexible times as patients’ needs require.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the safe and effective operation of the Sedation and General Anaesthesia clinical sessions and associated nursing team.
  • Prioritising of daily and weekly workload ensuring correction and completion of tasks to ensure effective clinical care.
  • To develop and monitor an order system to ensure all materials, sundries and instruments required are available for all Sedation sites.
  • To set-up a robust system to monitor stock levels and expiry dates of medicaments.
  • To develop and implement best practice in all sedation sites to ensure the smooth and efficient running of sedation sessions.
  • To work in partnership with the Booking and Access Team to collate all paperwork, x-rays, and blood test results as required for the individual’s sedation appointment.
  • To develop and maintain a system for each site to ensure that Special Care Dental Service instruments are made sterile and returned correctly following a sedation session and to liaise with HSDU department, if any inadequacies are identified in provision of service.
  • To work Coventry & Warwickshire-wide across at all sedation sites on a rotational basis.
  • To provide clinical assistance for a Clinician in the performance of their clinical duties which cover a range of procedures from full mouth dental examinations to minor oral surgery, in a clinical setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ability to receive and deal with complex and sensitive information from parents/carers and other clinical resources in relation to patients who have special needs, are medically compromised or have a communication barrier.
  • Dealing with patients with special care requirements, disabilities and nervous/phobic conditions.
  • To understand and maintain principles of confidentiality
  • To communicate sensitive information to staff and patients requiring a high level of persuasive and reassurance skills.
  • To liaise with the Booking and Access Team to arrange dates of lists, hospital staffing required, medical records to be made available and information to be sent to patients or parents/guardians.
  • To liaise with anaesthetists, recovery staff, ODP’s and ward staff as appropriate under the direction of the senior dentists.
  • To liaise with other health care professionals, wherever a joint anaesthetic procedure may be undertaken.
  • To liaise with Learning Disability Teams, MAPA, social workers, GP’s.
  • To work closely with Dental Nurse Leads to organise Dental nurse teams to be made available for each SCDS GA hospital and sedation session and to rotate Dental nurse teams for all involved to maintain skills and confidence with each site
  • To support dental nurses available to cover Sedation and GA.
  • Providing pre and post-operative instruction as directed by the Clinician.
  • Provide oral health promotion advice, specialised pre and post-operative treatment instructions.
  • To be the primary lead for all Sedation and GA theatre sessions, directing, guiding and leading nurses to ensure continuity and best practice.
  • To co-ordinate and direct all Sedation/GA pre-assessment clinics, liaising with the Booking and Access Team through to providing dental nurse support to the clinician.
  • To deputise for and support the Specialist Nurse GA Lead.
  • To provide chairside surgery assistance, as appropriate of the qualification of a Dental Nurse, for Clinicians in the performance of their range of duties for patients with complex special needs.
