Dental Health Support Worker

Spynie Dental Centre

Hours: 21.6 per week

Please note that while the base location is Spynie Dental Centre, Elgin (home to the Childsmile office), the successful candidate will be required to work across the Moray area.

NHS Grampian is seeking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Dental Health Support Worker to support delivery across Moray.

The post holder will play a key role in delivering the Childsmile programme, a nationally funded Scottish Government initiative aimed at improving the oral health of children and reducing health inequalities. There may also be opportunities to contribute to the delivery of other national oral health improvement programmes within the Caring for Smiles framework.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support and educate individuals, families and communities to improve oral health. This will involve facilitating access to preventative dental services, providing oral health advice, and signposting or referring individuals to appropriate community and support services.

The role also requires working collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations to help develop and strengthen local support networks. This may include linking with initiatives that address wider determinants of health, such as income maximisation, food and cooking skills, and community-based support. You will support the integration of oral health messages into a range of settings, including healthcare services, breastfeeding groups, and healthy weight programmes.

You will act as a key link between families, the dental team, health visiting teams and educational establishments participating in the programme, with a particular focus on engaging vulnerable groups and communities.

The post holder will:

  • Support educational settings in delivering the Childsmile toothbrushing programme
  • Deliver oral health education sessions to schools and community groups
  • Contribute to the organisation and delivery of the fluoride varnish programme, where applicable
  • Deliver engaging and creative oral health promotion to empower children and families

We are looking for someone who is a strong team player, motivated and proactive, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be confident engaging with a wide range of individuals and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong organisational skills and a methodical approach to work are essential. Flexibility and a willingness to travel across Grampian are required.

Applicants should have a good level of IT skills and be confident in delivering presentations to groups.

Access to a car for work purposes is essential.

The successful candidate will also be required to complete the six-module Childsmile training programme and associated portfolio.
