Job overview

We now have a vacancy for a full-time Decontamination Technician to work with the Hospital’s Sterilization and Disinfection Unit (HSDU) at the Royal Oldham Hospital, which is part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.

Shift pattern: 3pm - 11pm Monday to Thursday, 2.30pm - 10.30pm Friday.

The HSDU is responsible for the decontamination and sterilisation of invasive reusable medical devices. The HSDU is a purpose-built facility at the Royal Oldham Hospital and serves as the sterile services department for the organisation and beyond, ensuring that medical devices are made safe for use between each patient. The service is quality-driven, in line with the departments ISO 13485 Accreditation.

The successful candidate will undertake decontamination science duties to assist in providing a specialised decontamination and resupply of medical devices service, contributing to the clinical care of the patient. Under supervision, you will support the day-to-day operation of decontamination services, to meet the demands of the department’s workload.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake decontamination science duties and assist (under supervision) the workforce of Decontamination Production Managers and Supervisors, in providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.
  • To carry out the receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and sterilisation of reusable medical devices. Record all tasks in the Healthcare Science Information Systems (tracking and tracing) database.
  • Work in accordance with the Department’s Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Management Systems.
  • To plan your own workload with limited supervision.
  • The role involves exposure to blood and body fluids.
