Are you a dynamic and compassionate leader with a passion for Critical care care? We are seeking an experienced and motivated Unit Manager to lead Critical care, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care in a fast-paced and evolving clinical environment.

The Critical Care Unit at Aintree University hospital is a purpose built 31 bedded combined Level 2 and Level 3 unit. The unit is currently funded for 14 Level 3 beds and 12 Level 2 beds. The actual daily composition of the unit is fluid and depends on patient case-mix.

There are between 1200-1400 admissions per year of which 25% are elective surgical patients. Aintree University Hospital houses the supra-regional service for vascular surgery, Maxillo-facial and ENT surgery and Emergency General surgery. Since 2012, Aintree has been the regional Major Trauma Centre as part of the Mersey and Cheshire Trauma centre collaborative.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have management responsibility for the department over the 24hr period, ensuring a high standard of nursing care. Key responsibilities will include the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, effective leadership and staff management/development The post holder will always work within the NMC’s Code of Professional Conduct.

  • You will join the current management team within Critical Care and be a role model to our team and lead the development of staff within our unit. You will lead, provide and supervise a very high standard of compassionate care to our patients, whilst being accountable for staffing issues and managing a very large team.  You will support the safety and quality agenda of patient care and staff management, ensuring that the values and objectives of the Trust are met; whilst improving patient outcomes.
  • Furthermore, you will support the journey of the patient from admission to discharge, identify risk and formulate actions to reduce this risk and ensure patient throughput is effective. You will support the Matron, Consultants and the Multi Disciplinary Team and deputise for seniors in their absence.

As Critical Care Unit Manager, you will be responsible for the operational and clinical leadership of the Critical care unit, overseeing a multidisciplinary team and ensuring the smooth running of the unit. You will play a key role in service development, patient flow, and maintaining high standards of care and safety

Role requirements

  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration.
  • Significant senior post-registration experience in Critical Care.
  • Proven leadership and management experience with the ability to manage and prioritise workload.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and decision-making skills.
  • Passionate about delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care.
  • Ensuring safe staffing levels and skill mix through effective rostering
  • Monitor and manage staff sickness/absence in line with Trust policy.
  • Ensure that standards are managed and met in line with Clinical Governance.
  • Support and monitor staff performance ensuring that learning needs are identified through personal development plans and appraisal.
  • Support the implementation of the trust strategy for Nursing at Unit level
