Job overview

The post is for six months at Homerton Healthcare with a possibility to extend to 12 months. We would welcome applications from doctors with previous experience in a wide range of specialties, although relevant experience in critical care or anaesthesia is required in order to function independently as a registrar out of hours.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the intensive care unit, review of referrals and attendance at cardiac arrest and trauma calls, working with the duty consultant.

80% Clinical (Critical Care Duties):

  • Participation in the day-to-day management of critically ill patients within the ICU.
  • Integration of echocardiography into clinical decision-making.
  • Attendance at ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and on-call rota

20% Echocardiography Training & Development:

  • Dedicated time for supervised echocardiography practice.
  • Completion of a logbook aligned with national accreditation standards (e.g. FUSIC ).
  • Participation in echo teaching sessions, image review meetings, and case discussions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities

The Critical Care Echocardiography Fellow will support the delivery of critical care services while developing practical echocardiography capability within the department. The post holder will work closely with intensivists, cardiologists and sonographers, and will contribute to education, audit and quality improvement activity.

Main responsibilities

  • Perform and interpret focused and advanced echocardiography in critically ill patients.
  • Support haemodynamic assessment and management using ultrasound-based techniques.
  • Work collaboratively with intensivists, cardiologists, and sonographers.
  • Maintain accurate clinical and procedural documentation.
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and teaching activities.
  • Will also have opportunities to practise lung, abdomen, vascular access ultrasound skills and complete logbook towards achieving FUSIC accreditation if interested Please see job description and person specification for full details of the role.
