Job summary

Main duties of the job

As an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Apprentice, you will work under the supervision of registered practitioners to support the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality perioperative care. You will develop and apply clinical skills across anaesthetic, scrub, and recovery areas as your training progresses.

You will assist in preparing theatres, equipment, and consumables for surgical procedures and support the safe transfer, positioning, and care of patients throughout their surgical journey. You will monitor and record basic patient observations, escalating any concerns promptly to registered staff.

You will contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and sterile environment, following infection prevention and control standards at all times. You will support communication with patients, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team, ensuring dignity, privacy, and confidentiality are maintained.

You will assist with checking, preparing, and maintaining equipment and surgical instruments, reporting faults appropriately. You will also participate in stock control, documentation, incident reporting, and adherence to Trust policies and procedures.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will attend university study sessions, complete academic work, and actively engage in clinical assessments, training, and supervision. You will be expected to work flexibly across all theatre sites within the Trust as part of a countywide service.
