Job overview

The successful applicant will support the orthopaedic trauma and elective service.  The successful candidate will take part in the 1 in 12 orthopaedic trauma rota at Royal Oldham Hospital Care Organisation and undertake elective surgery at Fairfield General Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary.

The weekly program is an average 10 sessions, which will include clinics, theatre, direct clinical care on-calls and supporting professional activities (SPAs).

The consultant job plan will be subject to review during the initial six month period. The successful candidate will thus need to be flexible in order to allow capacity and demand to be managed. A detailed job plan will be available for discussion.

You will be part of a team of 16 orthopaedic consultants but also part of a wider Trauma, Orthopaedic and Plastics department across the NCA of 48 consultants.

The successful candidate will be fellowship trained in Trauma / Lower Limb knee surgery upon starting the post, adding to and complementing the existing members of the department.

The Northern Care Alliance will be the employer for the appointment and will issue the contract of employment. Candidates who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full time are eligible to apply and, if successful, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with the Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Main duties of the job

As part of the trauma unit at Oldham, you will cover dedicated on-calls and trauma lists on a 1 in 16 rota of weekdays and 1 in 12 weekends. This involves being part of a team providing a general trauma service and specialist lower limb surgery. Elective day-case operating sessions at the Rochdale infirmary with occasional in-patient work at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury.

Fracture clinics will have support from plaster technicians, occupational therapists and other essential allied health practitioners. There will be middle grade and junior level doctor support from both North West deanery trainees and Trust appointed doctors. Radiology support is provided by a dedicated group of MSK radiologists with excellent links to our department.

All Consultants will be allocated 1 core SPA per week for professional development(CPD), Job Planning, Appraisal, Mandatory Training, attendance at regular team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and participating in Audit. Additional SPA time will be made available to Consultants on the basis of evidenced need. Such allocation will be agreed and reviewed by the Consultant and Clinical Manager during the Job Plan review.
