An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Edward Myers Substance Misuse Inpatient Unit at North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust. The Edward Myers Unit is a specialist inpatient service providing assessment, stabilisation, and treatment for adults with complex substance misuse needs, including co-occurring mental health conditions. The post holder will play a key leadership role within a well-established, multidisciplinary team committed to delivering high-quality, recovery-focused care. This is an excellent opportunity for a consultant who is passionate about addiction psychiatry and wishes to contribute to service development, clinical excellence, and integrated care pathways across inpatient and community setting.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Responsibilities • Provide senior medical leadership to the inpatient substance misuse service. • Undertake comprehensive psychiatric assessments and develop evidence-based treatment plans. • Lead ward rounds and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. • Manage complex dual diagnosis cases in collaboration with community mental health and addiction services. • Provide clinical supervision to junior medical staff and contribute to their training and appraisal. • Participate in service development, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical governance activities. • Contribute to on-call consultant rota (details available upon request). About the Service The Edward Myers Unit delivers specialist inpatient detoxification and stabilisation for individuals with alcohol and drug dependency, often presenting with significant psychiatric and physical health comorbidities. The service works closely with community substance misuse teams, acute hospitals, and mental health services to ensure safe transitions of care and continuity of treatment. The Early Intervention in Psychosis Team has been in existence since the National Service Framework in the early 2000’s and is part of the Community Directorate.

It is a Level 4 NCAP assessed service (the highest possible rating), being regarded as a top performing team.

The point in team caseload is c 200 with an additional 60 service users in the At Risk Mental State (ARMS) pathway.

The Community Directorate consists of teams providing services through multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working.  They work in partnership with local councils and closely with the voluntary sector, independent and private organisations to promote the independence, rehabilitation, social inclusion and recovery of people with mental illness in North Staffordshire.
