Job overview

The post-holder will be Consultant Psychiatrist to Greyfriars PICU at Wotton Lawn Hospital, Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust.   Greyfriars is a 10-bed purpose built PICU for working-age adults. The unit is mixed sex, accommodating 3 female service users in a dedicated area of the ward, as well as an interchangeable accessible bedroom.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will provide senior medical leadership and responsibility for all patients on the PICU.  The unit works exclusively with patients under the Mental Health Act, and the post-holder will be the Responsible Clinician (RC).  They will lead their medical team of Specialty and Resident doctors, working collaboratively with the wider multi-disciplinary team, patients and their families to ensure safe and effective care-delivery.  The Consultant will work closely with operational management colleagues, the acute inpatient wards and with the Crisis Resolution/ Home Treatment Team and the Community Recovery Teams.  This is to ensure that admissions are purposeful and productive, enabling their patients to be stepped down from intensive psychiatric care and return home as soon as possible.

There is a well-established ECT service at Wotton Lawn Hospital, which is accredited under the RCPsych ECTAS scheme.  The service has also been recognised by the RCPsych for its innovative ‘ECT Café’ – This was launched in 2024 to enable patients and carers and NHS colleagues to have collaborative conversations about ECT, to ask questions and share experiences.  The PICU element of this role will support an expansion of service delivery and continuous improvement.
