EPUT is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist to join and lead on the Ardleigh ward based at the Lakes Mental Health Unit.

The Lakes Mental Health Unit in Colchester has 2 in-patient units.  Ardleigh ward which is an all-female patient unit since August 2015. The other unit is Gosfield ward which is an all-male ward. Each ward has 18 in-patient beds. The wards are refurbished with modern interiors, have attached excellent gardens, and are fully equipped. Each has its own LTS and seclusion facilities. There is also a 136-assessment suite working as a designated place of safety on this site.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have responsibility for the clinical care of those patients admitted to the in-patient unit on the ward. The post holder will also be expected to work closely with the team and the ward manager to ensure the provision of an effective service.

We have excellent links with the medical school at ARU and other educational establishments where we have shared appointments in teaching and research.

You must have full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register, with an appropriate CCT or equivalent or be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of the AAC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Work closely with other consultant colleagues to ensure that the patient journey is as smooth as possible.
  • Provide clinical leadership and actively liaise with general practitioners, psychiatrists, and other hospital specialists, statutory and non-statutory agencies, whenever relevant to the care and treatment of patients.
  • Be committed to a multidisciplinary approach to care.
  • Use evidence-based interventions at all times.
  • Offer a consistent response to referrers/service users regardless of origin of the referral in a timely fashion.
  • Offer an accurate diagnosis and timely interventions so that intensive treatment can be delivered to present chronicity and dependency on psychiatric services, in accordance with the recovery model.
  • Attend Mental Health Act assessments as requested for relevant patients.
  • Act as the Responsible Clinician for inpatients including attending Tribunals, as necessary.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of care programmes for patients.
  • Supervise junior and middle-grade doctors in the team.
  • Participate in the teaching programmes of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to the collection of clinical information to ensure further service development and to enable audit.
  • Work closely with consultant colleagues to contribute to the provision of appropriate Consultant cross cover for daytime, 9 am to 5 pm, (working days), and for periods of annual/study/special leave.
  • Participate in clinical governance and teaching activities.
  • Contribute to the day-to-day management and the overall service development agenda through appropriate involvement with managerial and clinical colleagues.
