Job overview

Are you a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in older adults and looking for an opportunity to work in a supportive, flexible and well-integrated multidisciplinary team?

As a clinical leader you will join a team that is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of care for its patients.

The North and West Oxfordshire CMHT provides mental health services to those aged over 65 living in the North and West of the county. The team operates from team bases in Banbury and Witney and you will provide mental health services to GP practices in and around Banbury (including Brackley and Deddington).

The main centres of population within the teams' catchment area are Banbury, Witney and Chipping Norton, but there is also a large rural population and numerous villages.

The team offers assessment and treatment of patients over the age of 65 with functional and organic mental illnesses. Diagnosis of dementia takes place in Memory Clinics with the support of dedicated non-medical staff. Patients with behavioural or psychiatric complications of dementia are managed within the general CMHT.

There is a CMHT duty team each day, working from the Oxford team base, to coordinate the team's response to referrals and to manage urgent clinical matters, liaising with medical staff.

Main duties of the job

  • The Consultant will provide senior medical input and clinical leadership to the CMHT. The post holder will have medical responsibility for those patients seen by himself/herself and for those patients seen by medical staff directly supervised by the post holder. The consultant will be expected to provide direct clinical care, ensure medical involvement in the CPA process, and implement MHA processes in the CMHT, as required.
  • The post holder will work alongside the rest of the senior staff in the CMHT to ensure the effective functioning and development of the service.
  • The Consultant will provide direct clinical supervision and line management to any trainees and specialty doctors for whom he/she is the identified clinical supervisor. This will include one hour per week of clinical supervision for trainees and an agreed level of supervision to speciality doctors. He/she will also be expected to provide clinical supervision to other trainees in the team as required.
  • The Consultant will provide timely written correspondence to relevant professionals, including GP colleagues, and will document clinical assessments, ongoing management, progress, and eventual discharge using Trust IT and clinical records systems. (Training will be provided where needed).
