We are inviting applications for a Consultant in Acute Paediatrics with a special interest in Cardiology. Applicants will have completed CCT or equivalent (Portfolio Pathway) and must be on the Specialist Register or due to have completed CCT within 6 months of interview date.
Proposed Interview date- 22nd May 2026.
Main duties of the job
General
All consultants in the department have a continuing and individual responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and a general responsibility to provide, in conjunction with their colleagues, an effective Service to meet the needs of the local population, within the resources available.
The post-holder will:
- Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care • Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines • Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients and A&E • Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care • Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team
Clinical Responsibilities
The key duties and responsibilities are:
- General responsibilities including participation in Consultant on call rota • Specialist Clinics • Outpatient clinics • Operating: as per specialty • Teaching • Other care of inpatients or outpatients • Clinical and other administration as required by agreement • Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates • Participation in Clinical Governance
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The job plan is expected to consist of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) and the exact details of job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate after their appointment.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Consultant of the week rota according to departmental requirements – currently on a 1:12 basis. There is usually one Consultant on call, covering general paediatrics in the morning and general paediatrics and neonates in the afternoon and an additional consultant on call for neonates in the morning. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in weekend and night on call cover. The successful candidate will be expected to share outpatient responsibilities with a minimum of 3 paediatric clinics a week, depending on other commitments. Further discussion re exact composition of the role can be clarified and discussed with the Clinical Lead prior to application and will be reviewed in line with the prior experience of the appointee. This will be formally accepted and reviewed as part of the Job Planning process of the trust. The successful candidate will be expected to share child protection/safeguarding work when “Consultant of the week”. There will be an expectation to share work related to relevant committees, working groups, educational supervision, and training of staff within the department.
