Southampton Children’s Hospital at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is recruiting a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, due to an upcoming retirement. This will be an exciting and varied role, working in one of the country’s busiest paediatric orthopaedic units. The role has flexibility to meet your needs and specialist interests. Particularly desired skillsets are in paediatric limb reconstruction, neuromuscular and trauma.
ABOUT THE TEAM
Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at UHS sits within the Child Health Care Group, which is part of the Women’s and Children’s Division.
A general service is provided to the children of the Southampton health economy. More specialist services cover the tertiary population stretching across the South coast.
Admissions occur via our dedicated paediatric orthopaedic ward, which includes a 6 bay HDU, and the paediatric day case unit. We are also supported by a 14 bedded PICU unit and high dependency facilities both on and off our ward.
Emergency admissions occur via the Children’s Emergency Department, regional referral and the paediatric medical admissions unit.
Clinics occur within a dedicated paediatric orthopaedic area and are supported by plaster room and on-site orthotics.
We run peripheral clinics held in the regional hospitals across the south central coast area and channel islands. Surgery is carried out in a dedicated paediatric orthopaedic theatre within the paediatric theatre unit.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
You will work with orthopaedic colleagues across UHS and the wider region to provide a full range of paediatric orthopaedic services. The elective work of this post, both inpatient and outpatient, will take place at Southampton Children’s Hospital and Dorset County Hospital (Dorchester). You will also participate in a 1:10 on call rota at Southampton to provide a 24-hour paediatric orthopaedic service within the Southampton paediatric Major Trauma Centre. You will also be a key link person for paediatric orthopaedics at your respective spoke hospital. There is opportunity for you to develop your own subspecialty interest in line with the needs of the departments. We are looking for particular expertise in limb reconstruction and experience in neuromuscular orthopaedics. You must be able to develop close working relationships with the other consultants, senior clinical fellows, resident doctors and allied health professionals in the department.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
The main purpose of this role is: • To undertake the full range of general and specialist consultant duties • To undertake duties in line with the agreed job plan • To provide training and support to junior medical staff • To ensure that junior medical staff perform their duties in line with agreed best practice • To represent the Division and the Hospital at external meetings and conferences as and when required • To help develop Clinical Network and Hub and Spoke model of specialist paediatric surgery. • To participate and contribute to the department via Research and Audit
