An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to join a friendly and enthusiastic team at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to explore their sub specialty interest, he or she will be an active member of the Skin Cancer MDT, working closely with Dermatology colleagues and other Skin Cancer MDT members at CTM UHB. They will be expected to be part of and carry out general and specialist OMFS duties including managing acquired and developmental facial deformities and be active members of the Orthognathic Surgery Specialist MDT. Previous craniofacial and orthognathic experience is desirable. All Consultants are based at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil with Clinical sessions in other Hospitals within the Health Board.
Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board is one of the largest Health Boards in Wales and was formed in 2019. It is situated near of the vibrant cities of Cardiff, Swansea and Bristol and is enriched with magnificent scenery including beautiful beaches and the stunning Brecon Beacons national park. The postholder will provide with clinical colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals within the UHB, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
The postholder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care, allowing correct delegation to/and training of staff.
The postholder will be involved in teaching and supervision of junior staff/students.
The postholder will be required to co-operate with management teams in the efficient running of the service and are expected to share with consultant colleagues in clinical leadership and management of the service working closely with the Clinical Service Director and Service Manager
Clinical
The post holder will provide with clinical colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals within the UHB, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients under his/her care, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. The post holder, in liaison with consultant colleagues will have responsibility for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational policy and strategic plan (as amended from time to time) of the UHB.
The post holder will be required to participate in the UHB's risk management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the UHB. The post holder will be positively encouraged to participate in research and development in line with UHB and NHS priorities.
The post holder will be expected to formulate a personal development plan in conjunction with the Clinical Service Director to identify training and development needs to form part of their whole practice appraisal.
The post holder will be expected to make a significant contribution to the service’s business planning process through active participation in the clinical service structure.
Travelling as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required to undertaking such duties.
Requirement for continuing professional development.
A study leave allowance of 30 days over a 3-year period is supported at the relevant rate.
Teaching
The post holder will be involved in the teaching and supervision of junior staff and students.
All Consultants teach and train at postgraduate and undergraduate level. There is a very active Medical Education Department led by Dr. Amanda Farrow AMD for Medical Education. A dental postgraduate unit is based at Prince Charles Hospital, which hosts a Dental Core Training scheme. A very active postgraduate programme is organised under Section II of the NHS Act.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the teaching of undergraduate dental and medical students on placement within the UHB and will be encouraged to develop Selected Study Component projects within the specialty for undergraduate students.
The UHB has recently refurbished its Postgraduate facilities at Prince Charles hospital, with a new lecture theatre and library. The library offers full facilities.
The successful candidate will participate in the departmental governance meetings.
Management
The post holder will be required to co-operate with local management teams in the efficient running of the service and are expected to share with consultant colleagues in the clinical leadership and management of the service working closely with the Clinical Service Director and Service Manager. In addition, it should be noted that a Clinical Service structure is in operation, which requires close co-operation and liaison with other colleagues as appropriate.
There is a requirement to work within the financial and other constraints decided upon by the UHB. Additional expenses of any kind must not be committed without the approval of the appropriate manager/budget holder.
Subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post holder will be expected to observe policies and procedures of the LHB, drawn up in consultation with the professions where they involve clinical matters.
The post holder will be expected to comply with local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures in the management of employees of the UHB.
The post holder will be required to ensure that arrangements are in place for the organisation of medical staff and that they are allocated duties in accordance with the work of the department.
