The West Suffolk Hospital hosts a busy Breast Department undertaking a wide range of operative work. It was formed as a result of the NHS Breast Screening Programme and screening started in 1989. It is committed to multi-professional team development maintaining national guideline standards. Currently, fourteen thousand patients are screened per year, with an 75-80% uptake. The Breast Unit sees upwards of 5000 symptomatic patients per annum, with approximately 340 cancers.
All breast referrals are seen within National Guidance, and we currently run up to 11 rapid access clinics per week, which are undertaken by consultant surgeons and support staff. Participation in at least 2 of these clinics is mandated.
All breast cases are discussed at a single weekly multidisciplinary meeting. Patients considering breast reconstruction are seen in the weekly plastic surgery clinic by a dedicated oncoplastic plastic surgeon and there is a separate Oncoplastic MDT.
There are nine moderns, fully equipped, operating theatres with one dedicated to surgical emergencies, one for obstetric emergencies and a third for trauma, which all run as 7 day services respectively. The theatre suite includes a large recovery unit which is adjacent to a fully equipped twelve-bedded Intensive Care Unit which is under the supervision of the Consultant Anaesthetist and two HDU beds and 24-hour recovery facilities. Three of the theatres are ultra-clean. There is also a standalone Day Surgery Unit with three theatres, one treatment room, two eye treatment theatres, recovery unit and ward area.
