Job overview

Liverpool Women’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LWHFT) is looking for a dynamic and inspiring Consultant Obstetrician to join our team to enhance obstetric services at Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust (LWHFT) and further develop our partnership working with the other NHS providers across the city. Liverpool Women’s Hospital is one of the largest purpose-built maternity units in Europe.

The Trust manages approximately 8,000 deliveries per annum, houses the regional Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit, the regional clinical genomics department, and an on-site gynaecological emergency room. LWHFT is the tertiary referral unit for Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Gynaecological Oncology, Reproductive Medicine and Urogynaecology, with subspeciality training programmes in these fields. The University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is also located on this site. LWHFT is one of three Maternal Medicine Centre’s in the Northwest

The post will provide whole time consultant level commitment to obstetrics services at the Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust (at the Crown Street and University Hospital Aintree sites).

Main duties of the job

The post is secondary to replacement and to support the existing team of obstetricians and maternal medicine consultants who provide specialised maternal medicine antenatal clinics, intrapartum and postnatal care. LWHFT currently provides services to women across Cheshire, Merseyside, and North Wales.

Liverpool Women’s Hospital is one of three Maternal Medicine Centres (MMC) within the North West Maternal Medicine Network along with St Mary’s Hospital Saint Mary’s Hospital (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) and Royal Preston Hospital (Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).   The Maternal Medicine Centres provide a regional service including pre-pregnancy, antenatal and postnatal care for women who have either pre-existing significant medical problems or medical problems arising in or shortly after pregnancy.  The MMC’s also provide advice and care for the most complex and highest risk women including those with respiratory, haematological, renal and cardiac problems and women diagnosed with cancer.  The expectation is that the post holder will provide regular maternal medicine and high-risk pregnancy antenatal clinics, which is open to discussion, that serves both the individual and the requirements of the service but may and could include cardiology, rheumatology, diabetes, haematology, hypertension, renal, inflammatory bowel and neurology

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is secondary to replacement and to support the existing team of obstetricians and maternal medicine consultants who provide specialised maternal medicine antenatal clinics, intrapartum and postnatal care. The majority of women with complications during pregnancy will continue to be managed by their local maternity team, however according to individual need, some women may receive a proportion of their care under the MMC. For some, a single visit or communication with the MMC will suffice. For the highest risk and most complex women, it may be that the majority of their care will be delivered by the MMC.    This model of care ensures that investigations and management plans are carried out by an experienced Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) comprising of obstetric physicians, specialist physicians, obstetricians, anaesthetists and midwives who have expertise in a range of medical conditions, ensuring all women receive timely specialist care and advice before, during, and after their pregnancy.  The MMC hosts a specialist MDT meeting, which will provide advice and care for high risk and complex women, along with system-wide leadership and education. The MDT includes obstetricians and physicians from the MMC and from across the region, a specialist obstetric anaesthetist, a fetal maternal medicine consultant, a neonatologist and specialist midwives The expectation is that the post holder will provide regular maternal medicine and high-risk pregnancy antenatal clinics, which is open to discussion, that serves both the individual and the requirements of the service but may and could include cardiology, rheumatology, diabetes, haematology, hypertension, renal, inflammatory bowel and neurology
