Job overview

The Department of Microbiology at Kingston Hospital provides a comprehensive clinical microbiology and infection prevention and control service, including daily ICU  rounds, regular antimicrobial stewardship rounds and an OPAT service.

Laboratory services are provided by South West London Pathology (SWLP), an NHS partnership between Kingston, St George’s, Croydon University Hospital and Epsom and St Helier Hospitals. The networked Microbiology service is hosted by St George’s, with shared governance by consultants from all partner Trusts. There is a small molecular laboratory onsite at Kingston with LIATs and GeneXperts for rapid Covid, influenza and RSV testing. Onsite norovirus testing is being piloted on the GeneXperts. Blood culture incubators are based onsite at Kingston.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

Authorisation of results,   Clinical advice via phone calls and e-referrals,   Antimicrobial ward rounds/ITU ward rounds,    OPAT service provision.

  • Twice weekly Teams meetings with the Microbiology/OPAT team for handover and case discussion. Liaise with Infection Prevention and Control team about significant positive results Laboratory liaison via the laboratory LIMS, emails or phone calls. Any governance issues to be escalated to the Lead Consultant, who will take to Pathology Governance if required. The post holder will work closely with the team of 4 existing consultants, Infection Prevention and Control team, OPAT nurses and antimicrobial pharmacists. The post holder will be trained to use the LIMS system (Winpath. Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education as required. Participate in an annual individual performance review process where
  • bjectives will be agreed, performance monitored, and personal development needs discussed. To attend all statutory and mandatory training as and when required to do so. Act responsibly in respect of colleagues’ health, safety and welfare following safe work practices and complying with the Trust’s Health and Safety Policies. Adhere to all Trust Policies as applicable.
