Job summary

A Trust-wide team of 5 substantive and one locum Consultant(s), providing clinical Microbiology services, Infection Control advice and clinical laboratory management for all Trust sites and within the community.

The Microbiology laboratory is based on the Worcestershire Royal Hospital site and has full UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation providing comprehensive diagnostic microbiology services to Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, local general practices and local private healthcare providers.

Clinical services include:

  • Authorisation of laboratory results (Mon-Sun)
  • Clinical advice liaison service (via phone and email)
  • Daily ITU ward rounds on 2 sites (Mon-Fri)
  • Weekly Infection MDT
  • Attendance at weekly Haematology MDT
  • Attendance at bone and joint MDT
  • Attendance at monthly TB MDT
  • AMS ward rounds
  • 24/7 out of hours service

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic team of Consultant Microbiologists in providing a comprehensive clinical microbiology and infection advice service to the Acute Trust and community.

This includes routine laboratory liaison and result authorisation, clinical liaison via phone, email or in person, and daily ITU ward rounds.

There is an equitable pro-rata share of this workload. In addition, there are regular MDTs which can be shared by mutual agreement.

All consultants currently have areas of specialist interest including Infection Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Laboratory lead, Education and Estates liaison. Areas of special clinical interest are encouraged in the successful candidate and will be considered in line with the current departmental profile. As a team, we are open to negotiating a job plan including Infectious Disease specialty work such as outpatient clinics, or ward rounds or input into the local OPAT service.

The post attracts 10 programmed activities, and the post holder will be expected to work flexibly across the Acute Trust hospital sites and to participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota which is shared with Consultant colleagues from Wye Valley NHS Trust, Hereford.
