Job overview

Applicants are invited for one Consultant post in Infectious Diseases (8 PAs) and Acute Medicine (2 PAs) at Nottingham University Hospitals. The post encompasses both Queens Medical Centre and the City Campus of Nottingham University Hospital.

The Acute Medicine Unit has four clinical areas, totalling 85 beds, including Level 1 monitored beds, an in-reach function to the Emergency Department and a triage role for acute admissions. There is a high turnover of patients with interaction with all adult specialties across the Trust.

The Infectious Diseases and OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy) Department is based at the City Campus. At City Campus there is a 13 bed, dedicated Infectious Disease Ward, which has seven en-suite side rooms, five with monitored, negative pressure ventilation. Patients with a wide range of infections are seen including HIV, tuberculosis, returned travellers, community and hospital acquired infections, and pyrexia of unknown origin. Patients often first arrive at the Queens Medical Centre, and may then wait there before a bed is available at City Campus for transfer. Duties in Infectious Diseases include contributions to inpatient care at City Campus, outreach work to Queens Medical Centre and out of hours on call, in rotation with existing Consultants.

Main duties of the job

Existing Consultants rotate between roles. While they contribute to fixed clinics and the on-call rota through the year, periods of time caring for Infectious Diseases inpatients are combined with their other roles in OPAT, Microbiology/Virology or Acute Medicine. This post will combine periods of time in Acute Medicine at Queens Medical Centre amounting to 2 PAs, with 8 PAs for work related to the care of Infectious Diseases inpatients at City Campus ward and outreach time at the QMC campus reviewing patients referred to Infectious Diseases for consultations or prior to transfer to the City Campus. When on duty at City Campus there will also be a contribution to clinic at City Campus. The intention of outreach work at QMC is to aid the flow and progress of patients with earlier specialist review.

The on-call commitment for Infectious Diseases included in this post will be 1:7.5, supported by Infectious Diseases Junior staff. This post is deemed to be in Category B and an allowance is paid for being on-call, which is currently 2%. Recent diary calculations for weekend on-call work indicates that this amounts to ~0.6 PA
