This is a post for a consultant in Infection (microbiology or microbiology and infectious diseases). The post will be based at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) working within Severn Infection Sciences (SIS). There would also be an expectation that the successful candidate would provide clinical services at Weston General Hospital (WGH), as clinical microbiology services there are delivered through NBT.
The successful applicant would join a team of established consultants in infection and is funded to deliver 6 PAs. Out-of-hours the post holder would be expected to provide clinical support for both NBT and WGH, through participation in an on-call rota.
Of note, NBT and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston (UHBW) have recently formed a Hospital Group, and are pursuing a process of a formal merger. Within a merged organisation, single managed services would be developed, with the view that clinical microbiology services across all sites would be delivered by a unified department. This would mean that increased cross site working (across all sites served by the merged organisation) will be required, and there would be an expectation for the postholder to participate fully in this.
The successful applicant will:
Take a proactive role in delivering the clinical infection service, sharing continuous responsibility for the care of patients in liaison with clinical consultant colleagues.
Participate in the out-of-hours service for NBT and WGH and the surrounding area served. Currently this is a 1:8 (with inclusive cover) on-call commitment.
The appointee will, together with their consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective clinical microbiology, and infection prevention & control service to NBT and UHBW, and within Severn Infection Sciences.
Work with colleagues in the local/ regional health protection teams to support medical microbiology/ public health and surveillance duties and provide support for outbreak or incident management with advice on the prevention, diagnosis, control or treatment of illness as part of an acute public health response.
Laboratory commitments include day-to-day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens, authorisation, and interpretation of results.
Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.
