Job overview

Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant in Hepatology with General Gastroenterology. This is a 10 PA role split between Newham University Hospital (NUH) and The Royal London Hospital (RLH), with an exciting opportunity to lead in the development of community-based hepatology services.

The post will primarily be based at Newham Hospital, supporting inpatient and outpatient hepatology and gastroenterology care. You will join a dedicated and diverse team delivering high-quality liver health services to one of the UK’s most ethnically varied populations. The role also includes endoscopy and general and community hepatology clinics.

A key element of this role will be developing and delivering innovative community-based hepatology clinics. This aligns with NHS goals to provide care closer to home and includes the use of community diagnostics such as transient elastography.

The provisional interview date for this post, is the 23rd of June.

This post is pending Royal college approval

Main duties of the job

At The Royal London Hospital, you will be part of a well-established and high-performing hepatology team, contributing to Level 2 hepatology services at RLH with access to tertiary services including portal hypertension management, HCC treatment via the HPB MDT, and outreach liver transplant support.

There is no commitment to the GIM on-call rota, but the successful applicant will participate in the GI bleed out-of-hours rota at Newham.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to clinical governance, audit, and departmental management, and to support the ongoing development and improvement of hepatology pathways.

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative Consultant with strong clinical leadership skills and a passion for driving improvement in liver care to join our friendly, forward-looking, and high-performing team. A specialist interest in community-based hepatology, viral hepatitis, or HCC surveillance is desirable, though not essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining their CCT at the time of interview. Newly appointed consultants will be supported by a structured mentoring programme and will be encouraged to contribute to teaching, research, and service development. Barts Health is committed to supporting new consultants in their transition into post and to fostering a culture of inclusion, development, and continuous learning.
