Main duties of the job

The role of the acute medical Geriatrician has been developed over the last 5 years to provide specialist Geriatric medical input to frail older people within the acute medical admission pathway.  Our experience shows that patients who are on the Geriatric Assessment Unit, working with a multidisciplinary team results in more frail older people being discharged earlier in the pathway.

We in-reach into the Emergency Department and work alongside the emergency physicians in identifying frailty at the front door. We have also been part of the Acute Frailty Network and labelled a beacon site by them. More consultant geriatricians are being appointed to enable us to deliver this service more consistently across the week. We expect these roles to develop and change over the coming months and years as the acute medical pathways are reviewed so they are better able to meet the increasing demands being put on them.

A thoughtfully designed Job Plan Our draft job plan reflects our best current assessment based on a 10 PA model, with the standard split for new consultants at NUH of:

  • 8 PAs Direct Clinical Care (DCC)
  • 2 PAs Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)

This structure allows time for clinical excellence as well as education, leadership, research, and personal development. Additionally, all new consultants in the Geriatric service—aligned with other Royal College of Physicians Group I specialties—are allocated a 0.5 PA contribution to support the generalist and unselected needs of our patients. This contribution can either be provided directly by you or shared across the wider service.

Your support system from day one

Primary base & cross-campus working While the service spans both of our major campuses, your primary base will be the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC), with structured support in place for any cross-site working.

On-Call and Additional Commitments

  • Specialty on-call weekends: ~1 in 6
  • Specialty telephone on-call: ~1 in 25
  • Acute Medicine Out-of-Hours (OOH) on-call shifts: ~1 in 30 (0.4 PA)
