The Emergency Department (ED) was purpose built in 2014 and offers state of-the-art facilities. This was part of a new development at YGC called the Emergency Quadrant (EQ) which brings all Emergency and Acute Services together. The EQ houses the ED, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), a 24 bed Acute Medical Unit, Surgical Assessment Unit, Radiology services, and a co-located Primary Care facility.
The ED sees a full case mix of undifferentiated emergencies encompassing all specialties including Major Trauma, Stroke, Cardiac, Vascular, ENT, Ophthalmology, Max Fax and Paediatrics.
The Department has also been undergoing a process of implementation of modern models of Emergency Care including streaming, ambulatory majors, and rapid assessment. The ED is also keen to explore a ‘Physician Response Vehicle” or PRV model providing a mixed EM and ambulance service response to selected cases in which alternative pathways avoiding hospital admission may be to the patients benefit.
There are opportunities available to contribute via competitive appointment to the Welsh Air Ambulance Emergency and Retrieval Service (EMRTS).
