Main duties of the job

UHBW is one of the busiest EDs in the South West, seeing 80,000 adults per year. The ED attendances at the BRI are of high acuity and reflect the broad spectrum attending an inner-city ED, with an average of 220 attendances per day. UHBW also serves as a large tertiary referral centre for many specialities such as cardiology and cardiac surgery with 24-hour Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)available and operating as a Cardiac Arrest Centre. BRI ED is a Trauma Unit part of the Severn Major Trauma Network (SMTN), which coordinates Major Trauma services across the former Avon area as well as parts of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. The Emergency Department has recently scored consistently 'Good/Excellent' for Higher Specialist Training and 'Excellent' for GP Training. We have also come a respectable 9th across the country for patient experience (GMC).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Join a dynamic multidisciplinary team of senior medical, nursing, and management staff delivering and advancing high-quality Emergency Care across South, West, and Northwest Bristol. This busy inner-city Emergency Department manages over 220 patients daily, offering a broad and complex case mix. The role involves providing senior clinical presence on the shop floor from 08:00 to 00:00, seven days a week, with additional on-call responsibilities.

Close collaboration with Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), ICU, and specialty teams is essential to ensure seamless, patient-centred care. Emergency staff retain responsibility for immediate care, while ongoing management is coordinated with relevant specialties.

The post includes leadership responsibilities during major incidents and supports emergency admissions under on-call specialty teams.
