The Emergency Department at Morriston Hospital is the major unit for South West Wales seeing more than 85,000 new patients per year and around 6,000 follow-ups.   Due to surrounding minor injury units, there is an emphasis at Morriston on major trauma and serious medical presentations.   The unit benefits from the on-site support of all major specialties with ophthalmology, neonatology and obstetrics & gynaecology located on the Singleton hospital site in Swansea and neurosurgery provided at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The Emergency Department underwent significant changes during 2020 and now supports a Children’s Emergency Unit, a dedicated area that includes separate reception, waiting room, 1 triage room, 1 CAMHS assessment room, 1 resus and 1 HDU cubicles and 8 trolleys inclusive of four cubicles.  The adult department currently includes a 5 bedded resuscitation area, 3 spaces for ambulance handover and rapid assessment, 3 walk-in triage and initial assessment rooms, 15 trolley spaces (including 5 cubicles), 6 ambulatory spaces, a dedicated mental health room and a fit to sit area for observation and treatment.  There is a separate ENP run minor injury stream with an area that includes a waiting space and 4 clinical bays.  These rooms are also  used for our review clinics, by our physiotherapy practitioners and our dedicated occupational therapists.
