Job overview

Applications are invited for 2 x substantive Consultant Posts in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine (10PA) at NUH.

NUH provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services including structured education programmes for people with Type1 and Type 2 diabetes, transitional care, an insulin pump service and well established antenatal, foot and renal services. Four GP Cluster-based Community Diabetes Services have been developed and receive consultant support.

Outpatient Endocrinology is provided in the  Treatment Centre. Regional neurosurgical facilities are provided in NUH, and there are well established endocrine surgical services at the Trust and the Treatment Centre for thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal disorders. The service has well established links with paediatric endocrinology (paediatric transition), neurosurgery (joint pituitary clinic and monthly regional MDT meeting), thyroid surgery (including thyroid cancer MDT), adrenal disease (quarterly MDT) and gynaecology (quarterly MDT Turner’s clinic). The endocrine team has recently established clinical service links with the Nottingham Gender Dysphoria Service.

There are excellent links with Departments of Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Vascular Surgery, Pituitary & Endocrine Surgery, Infectious Disease (OPAT services), Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Nephrology & Transplant and Clinical Chemistry.

Main duties of the job

The post will provide inpatient ward cover to a GIM/specialty ward at the QMC campus (shared equitably with consultant colleagues on a rota basis) and will support the development of an inpatient and community diabetes service. Acute Medicine on calls will be based at the QMC campus. Outpatient clinics will be delivered on both campuses and will include General Diabetes, Endocrine, Antenatal Diabetes clinic,  Preop Diabetes clinic  and Community Diabetes clinic.

We are looking for a colleague who is dynamic, flexible and willing to join a team who deliver high clinical standards in both inpatient and outpatient areas. There will be opportunities to get involved in service development as the department evolves its clinical work in a changing NHS environment. The successful applicant will therefore be expected to work collaboratively with our strong multi-disciplinary team to actively drive further service development.

The appointee will be encouraged to support and develop established research and teaching links with Nottingham University. All our Consultants are appointed as Clinical Teachers by Nottingham University.
