James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine to a newly created permanent post. The successful candidate will deliver inpatient care within the Short Stay Medical Unit as part of the Acute Medicine service, alongside providing outpatient and inpatient care for patients with diabetes and endocrine conditions. This includes managing Diabetes patients using Hybrid Closed Loop technology, delivering general diabetes and endocrinology clinics, and supporting antenatal diabetes services.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant Endocrinologist will share responsibility for the delivery of a comprehensive Diabetes and Endocrine service, alongside management of acute inpatients within our Short Stay Medical Unit located within the urgent and emergency care (UEC) floor. The role includes offering expert consultation and advisory support to colleagues across other specialties, working collaboratively through multidisciplinary meetings, and contributing to postgraduate education within the Trust. The post holder will play an active role in teaching, audit, research, clinical governance, and continuing professional development in line with Royal College of Physicians requirements. They will contribute to the effective management and development of the service, with opportunities to undertake leadership roles, and will work in accordance with the agreed consultant job plan, deploying flexible professional time to support emergency care, liaison activities, education, audit, and service improvement.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Full and Specialist registration in Diabetes and Endocrinology, and in General (Internal) Medicine (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.

Desirable

  • MD/PhD

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty especially with a wide experience in General Internal Medicine and Diabetes and Endocrinology
  • Wide experience in Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine

Desirable

  • Experience in managing diabetes and endocrinology problems in pregnancy.
  • Experience in managing patients on hybrid closed loop insulin pumps.

Academic Achievements

Essential

  • Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
  • Experience of using evidence base to support decision making

Desirable

  • Involvement in research projects and published papers
  • Formal training in teaching skills

  • Ability and enthusiasm for teaching health care professionals and medical students in a Endocrinology & General Medicine setting
  • Capable of organising and prioritising work effectively
