We are seeking to appoint a dynamic consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to join the growing team here at University Hospitals Tees. This is a substantive post joining an existing team of consultants who lead patient care in the critical care unit at The University Hospital of North Tees.
The unit is funded for x10 level 3 and x6 level 2 beds with physical capacity for 17 patients. This unit supports an acute general medical unit, emergency surgery, trauma unit service and elective surgery including colorectal, spinal, urology and an obstetric unit. The critical care unit admits approximately 400 Level 3 and 600 Level 2 admissions annually. Resident cover is provided by staff and associate specialist doctors and resident doctors with appropriate competencies. The unit also has five established ACCPs.
The unit is a member of the North of England Critical Care Network and a yearly multi-disciplinary conference is held to celebrate the year’s achievements. The unit subscribes to the ICNARC Case Mix programme and has a well-established electronic patient record system (“Trakcare”).
Job plans are negotiable dependent on sub-specialty interests and there are opportunities to deliver clinical sessions across other UHT hospitals - James Cook University Hospital, Friarage Surgical Hub and Hartlepool Surgical Hub.
There are opportunities for daytime critical care sessions at James Cook University Hospital which is a major trauma centre with tertiary medical and surgical services.
The current target operating model for critical care cover is based on a 1:13 rota (currently staffed to 1:12). This rota model is designed to accommodate a 2nd clinical speciality interest and bespoke job plans will need to be generated depending on the post-holders individual requirements.
The rota is designed to facilitate continuity of care where there is a lead ICM consultant providing daytime care Monday – Thursday (0800-1800) with no overnight on-call duties during this time. Friday daytime is currently covered 0800-1800 then as out of hours duties.
There is a 2nd ICM consultant working with the lead consultant 0800-1300 Monday-Friday. Currently consultants work additional ICM daytime sessions (e.g. a regular day once per week) constructed around other commitments and out of hours cover provision.
In order to promote fairness single FICM CCT holders will undertake the same daytime footprint as those with dual job plans with opportunities for increased clinical ICM after review. The current target operating model is also being reviewed and there is a plan to increase ICM consultant cover so that there are x2 daytime ICM consultants Monday-Friday 0800-1800.
Daytime sessions at the James Cook University Hospital will be offered to all post-holders.
Out-of-hours duties for critical care on-call rota:
On-call supervision of resident/ locally employed doctors
