Job overview

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit a Consultant in Cellular Pathology.  The appointed candidates will join an existing team of 6 senior medical staff including Consultants. On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established, friendly team and will help us continue to drive forward improvements in the service that we provide to our patients.

As a senior member of the team, you will become a key part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior colleagues.

The department has UKAS accreditation to ISO151589:2012. It processes and reports, per year, approximately 23,000 surgical specimens (approximately 18,000 for the NHS with 16% from general practitioners), 1200 diagnostic cytopathology specimens and 1000 semenology samples. These arise from a population of approximately 300,000.

Main duties of the job

The laboratory was designed in collaboration with the staff and has modern equipment including height adjustable dissection benches and a recently introduced Sakura Tissue-Tek Prisma® Plus automated slide stainer and coverslipper, and a Dako Omnis immunohistochemistry immunostainer. Another similar immunostainer is being brought in to meet the increasing demands of immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology. The laboratory currently operates with two digital scanners which are used on a daily basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service. It is anticipated that the successful candidates will take a lead in at least one of the subspecialties. 1. Timely reporting of cases on a daily allocation basis 2. Preparation of MDTs 3. Attendance at MDTs 4. Participation in Departmental Meetings 5. Supervision of BMS staff in the cut-up section of the department 6. Involvement in cut -up if required.
