Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a candidate interested in a consultant haematologist post at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic haematologist to join our well established, dedicated and supportive team.

The successful candidate will join a team of eight consultants supported by four registrars from the North East London rotation and five clinical fellows to serve a population of 750,000.

Any consultant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

There is a designated microbiology laboratory with direct consultant microbiologist support and a very busy histopathology department diagnosing almost half the cancers treated in the whole of North East London. There is a state-of-the-art radiotherapy facility and a fully functioning pharmacy with access to advice from a specialist haematology pharmacist.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have training and expertise in both malignant and non-malignant aspects of haematology and will be expected to provide the following services to a high standard:

  • Triage of electronic referrals from primary care including advice to GP colleagues, and acceptance of appropriate referrals on routine, urgent and suspected cancer pathways
  • Undertake three outpatient clinics per week
  • Attend and participate in an MDT relevant to your specialist area
  • Support the diagnostic service and complete in-house reporting of bone marrows; attend and participate in weekly morphology review
  • Manage acutely unwell patients on the dedicated haematology and oncology ward as well as outlying wards and the day unit. Duties include a daily board round on Sky B and a ward round twice a week
  • Participate in the on-call rota 1:7.5
  • Participate in the core medical trainee and specialist haematology trainee teaching programme in addition to being a clinical supervisor for junior doctors
  • Where appropriate contribute to the existing clinical trials programme
  • Comply with the structures and requirements for clinical governance within the Trust including but not exclusively attendance at local morbidity and mortality meetings, timely investigation and response to complaints and incidents, participation in collection and analysis of patient and carer feedback
