Job overview

Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant Geriatrician with a specialist interest in frailty primarily based at its Aintree Site. This is a 12-month, fixed term post to provide cover for maternity leave.

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to join our existing team of 15 geriatricians. We have a well-established and innovative team of Geriatricians who provide general and sub specialty services including a Frailty Assessment Unit, Hyperacute Stroke Unit providing 24/7 thrombolysis and endovascular intervention, Orthogeriatrics providing Orthopaedic in-reach,  Community Geriatrics working with Integrated care Teams,  Metabolic Bone Disease services, Parkinson’s disease service, Falls service and a Day Hospital service.

This post will be fixed term for 12 months on a full time basis (10PAs), though less than full time will also be considered.

Applicants must be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register and should have CCT in Geriatric Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine (or equivalent), or be within six months of this at time of interview.

Main duties of the job

Acute Geriatrics:

  • The successful applicant will provide frailty in reach services to the emergency floor. Although the number of patients will vary each session the number would not be expected to exceed 8 patients.
  • They will contribute to the DMOPS on call rota
  • They will provide clinical supervision to trainees in the Department of Medicine for Older People and Stroke and supervise undergraduates and other students within the department
  • There is the opportunity to develop a rapid access frailty clinic.

Frailty:

  • The post holder will have sessional work on the Frailty Assessment Unit (FAU) where they will work alongside the Frailty consultants to deliver comprehensive geriatric assessment to patients presenting at the front door. These sessions will involve reviewing short stay patients to a maximum of 14 patients or working within the ambulatory assessment area. The number of patients within ambulatory will vary each day but would not be expected to exceed 8 patients.

General Geriatrics/Orthogeriatrics

  • The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to provide sessional work to on the general geriatrics wards in conjunction with the teams. This would involve leading board round and reviewing up to 15 patients.
  • Depending on the candidate’s prior experience and wishes, there may be the opportunity for sessional orthogeriatrics work on the Fractured Neck of Femur Ward.
