Job overview

Join a progressive surgical team shaping the future of colorectal care across Cambridgeshire and beyond.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive Consultant Colorectal/General Surgeon to join the Division of Surgery at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.

You will join a large, dedicated colorectal team delivering a comprehensive service to a population of approximately 500,000 people across Peterborough, Hinchingbrooke, and Stamford Hospitals. The department performs around 300 colorectal cancer resections annually, the majority laparoscopically, and has excellent endoscopy and theatre facilities, including a bowel cancer screening centre.

This post provides a stimulating and rewarding opportunity to contribute to the continued development of our colorectal and general surgical services within a progressive Trust that values innovation, teaching, and research.

Main duties of the job

As a Consultant in Colorectal and General Surgery, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Taking full clinical responsibility for colorectal and general surgical patients.
  • Promoting the further development of colorectal surgical services.
  • Supporting the delivery of clinical governance through audit, review and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to achieve the collective aims of the department.
  • Developing innovative working practices and supporting the evolving contribution of non-medical staff.
  • Supervising, training and managing junior medical staff.
  • Contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate education and clinical training programmes.
  • Working with the Clinical Directorate management team to ensure that national targets and quality standards are achieved.

You will also act as Educational and Clinical Supervisor for Foundation Year, Core and Specialist Trainees and will be encouraged to lead and present audits at monthly Departmental Quality Governance meetings.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the 1:10 on-call rota and contribute to the continuous improvement of service delivery across Trust sites.
