Oxford University Hospitals Trust is developing its Emergency General Surgery Department based on 9 Consultant Emergency General Surgeons, 1 Specialist in Emergency General Surgery, 6 Senior Clinical Fellows, 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners and daily Consultant Peri-operative Physician input. This is supported by appropriate access to emergency and urgent operating theatre lists, level 1 and 2 critical care support for perioperative care, and timely access to all diagnostic services.  This post is for one of nine Consultants providing leadership and service at all stages of the emergency surgery pathway from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care. Consultant roles in the unit include “hot” consultant leading the on-call take, dedicated emergency theatre days, ward and emergency clinic cover. There is job-planned time for elective clinics, operating and endoscopy. The appointee will be expected to support the emergency colorectal service and provide colorectal support for the tertiary endometriosis service.

The surgical emergency unit provides emergency general surgery services for the Oxford area, acute surgical support for other units in the Trust (e.g. IBD, intestinal failure, nutrition) and a tertiary acute surgical service for the region (e.g. complex pancreatitis, trauma).

The work is supported by an on-call rota which includes other consultant general surgery colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

The job is primarily based in Emergency General Surgery, with an elective surgery component to the job plan comprising about 20% of the job plan. It will be expected that candidates will have a declared subspecialty interest in colorectal surgery and be able to demonstrate an interest and experience in colorectal endometriosis surgery. There is also the requirement to be proficient in complex IBD surgery. The post holder will not be undertaking elective colorectal cancer surgery. The post holder’s duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for emergency surgery and the Churchill and / or Horton Hospital in Banbury for elective work, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training resident doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of every day clinical activity. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
