Job overview

Applications are invited for a full-time Consultant post in Cellular Pathology at the Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Foundation Trust. We are happy to consider applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time, supporting flexible and inclusive working arrangements.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a cohesive, friendly, and highly motivated team in a supportive and forward-thinking department. We would particularly welcome applicants with a specialist interest, or a desire to develop an interest, in reporting skin, head and neck, or breast pathology. These interests would complement the expertise of our existing consultants, although there is also flexibility to discuss and accommodate other specialist interests.

We offer a rewarding and balanced job plan that allows you to develop your professional interests, deliver excellent clinical care, and contribute to training and mentoring the next generation of consultants. At RUH, we value new ideas, fresh perspectives, and collaborative working—your experience and innovation will be genuinely welcomed. Our shared values of Everyone matters, Working together, and Making a difference shape everything we do.

Main duties of the job

You will be a Consultant Cellular Pathologist with a specialist interest in reporting skin, head and neck and/or breast pathology, or with a strong commitment to developing expertise in one or more of these areas. We also welcome expressions of interest in additional specialist reporting areas that complement the skills and interests already within the department.

The department is progressing towards a Specialist Reporting model, with workload allocation aligned to the Royal College of Pathologists’ Best Practice Recommendations for Staffing and Workload in Cellular Pathology (5th edition). This approach supports fair, sustainable, and manageable workloads, tailored to your agreed job plan.

Based on your declared specialist interests and EQA participation, you will contribute to the relevant cancer multidisciplinary team(s) and play a key role in delivering high-quality diagnostic services. A commitment to maintaining professional expertise and achieving robust cancer diagnostic turnaround times is essential.

You will also be expected to participate in clinical governance activities, including audit, and undertake associated administrative responsibilities as part of a collaborative and supportive team.
