Job overview

This is a Consultant Cardiologist position for 10 Programmed Activities per week with an additional PA available subject to negotiation and will include participation in a 1:7 Cardiology hot week on-call. If successful, you will be encouraged to develop specialist interest in angiograms and pacemakers locally. Teaching and participation in audit and research interest are encouraged.

The post holder will join an existing team of 7 dynamic cardiologists and to undertake OPD and IP activities at Walsall Manor Hospital NHS Trust and given the skill sets, may participate in the development of services.

The Cardiology department have a robust programme for mentoring the new Consultant appointment: the successful candidate will have a clear designated supervisor within the departments and appraisal annually with set PDPs. The Trust is willing to consider applications from those candidates who wish to work less than full time.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for ensuring a commitment in providing a high-quality cardiology service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against Clinical standards.
  • To provide advice to primary and secondary care colleagues in other specialities in relation to cardiac problems and overseeing the internal referrals assessed by junior and specialist cardiac team.
  • To provide a comprehensive outpatient service from clinics provided in both the main Outpatient Department and specialist clinics held within the Clinical Measurement Unit (Approx 5 new, 4 follow up per clinic)
  • To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students Postgraduate Medical Education in general. The Trust will strongly Support and allow time for CPD for the Successful candidate.
  • To support and encourage audit and research and develop close links with academic initiatives.
  • To actively participate in CME and personal development programmes.
  • To complement non-invasive imaging in addition to overseeing and addressing clinically urgent cardiology reporting within the Clinical Measurement Unit.
  • To develop an interest in coronary interventions.
  • To support the on-going development of services for cardiology in line with the existing programmes for management of coronary heart disease, angina and heart failure liaising with community and primary care services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The working week for a full-time Consultant is comprised of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) each of which has a nominal timetable value of 4 hours. Typically, a consultant will spend 8.5 PAs on Direct Clinical Care with 1.5 PAs on Supporting Professional Activities.

The non hot week job timetable is scheduled to reflect 8.5 direct clinical care PA and 1.5 SPA for teaching, audit & CME. The hot week job plan reflects 8.5 PA Direct Clinical Care with 1.5 PAs on Supporting Professional Activities plus on general cardiology call.

A job plan in regard work distribution will be agreed with the Clinical Director and postholder on appointment
