Job overview

Cardiology in East Kent Hospitals is one of the largest services in the South East, and is the regional heart attack centre for the 1.4 million population of Kent and Medway, and is the 7th busiest in the UK.

The PCI rota involves intervention operators from the other PCI centres of Kent. We have a comprehensive set of tools at our disposal to optimise the treatment of coronary disease including rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithoplasty, FFR, IMR as well as IVUS and OCT for intravascular imaging.

We are looking for an expert in coronary intervention.  This is a permanent appointment within a team of 18 full time consultants working across the organisation, 8 of which are interventionists.

Main duties of the job

This is a substantive post, for a Consultant Cardiologist with a sub-speciality interest in Interventional Cardiology at William Harvey Hospital. The post holder will primarily contribute to the coronary intervention service across the Trust, with an annualised average weekly commitment of 2-3 five-hour Cath lab sessions. The Primary PCI rota for STEMI/OOHCA patients covers the whole of Kent, with a 1:12 contribution to the rota. With 18 full time consultant cardiologists across the trust (12 based at William Harvey Hospital) covering subspecialties including PCI (8), pacing and EP (7), imaging (stress echo 2, MRI 1, CT 6) there is a wealth of locally available expertise for colleagues to call on.

On Call Arrangements: A general cardiology inpatient service is provided across the Trust, and over an 18-week cycle, you would lead this on both sites, with a week at QEQM and a week at WHH (1 in 9 Consultant-of-the-Week). Overnight responsibilities involve category B on-call to support the WHH middle grade rota (1 in 18, separate from the arrhythmia or coronary emergency rotas).

A weekend ward round and review of new admissions happens at both WHH and QEQM, sometimes as a split weekend (1 in 6).

During the 18-week cycle there are also 7 consecutive days of no programmed activity to support your wellbeing.
