Job Purpose:
- To provide a consultant led service in Cardiology with specialisation in cardiac imaging and Pulmonary hypertension service
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide cardiac MRI and Pulmonary hypertension service
- Provide inpatient care on cardiology wards, assessment of cardiac patients on MAU, inpatient referrals and Advice and Guidance service to GPs by participating on the non PCI consultant rota, currently 1 in 10 weeks, with appointment of 4 additional consultants over the next 12 months.
- Participate in innovative community integration models to provide cardiac care to local population.

Role Requirements
You will be expected to undertake 2 general cardiology clinics in a full week. Weekly sessions for cardiac MRI will be available. There will be weekly Pulmonary hypertension MDT and right heart catheterisation lists. You will be expected to take part on Braunton ward rota which is currently 1 in 10. You will also be part of the rota to provide inpatient cardiology reviews and Advice and Guidance services to GPs, currently 1 in 10. Additional 4 consultant appointments are being made over the next 12 months who will be part of these rotas.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To provide a consultant-led cardiology service with subspecialty expertise in cardiac imaging (especially cardiac MRI) and Pulmonary Hypertension, while contributing to the wider delivery of inpatient and outpatient general cardiology services.
Clinical Duties
- Deliver two weekly general cardiology outpatient clinics, including patients requiring advanced imaging and PH follow-up.
- Provide advanced cardiac imaging services, including cardiac MRI and echocardiography, with opportunities for CT depending on skills and service needs.
- Lead and develop the Pulmonary Hypertension service, including:
Dedicated PH clinics.
Weekly PH MDT meetings.
Performance and interpretation of right heart catheterisation procedures.

- Contribute to inpatient cardiology services including:
Consultant ward rounds on Braunton Ward.

- Contribute to community integration models for delivering accessible, high-quality cardiac care across the Southwest.
Multidisciplinary & Network Working
- Attend and contribute to cardiology MDTs, including Imaging, Pulmonary Hypertension, Endocarditis, Valve and Revascularisation meetings.
- Collaborate with colleagues in radiology, respiratory medicine, intensive care, and cardiothoracic surgery for joint management of complex cases.
- Develop and strengthen regional PH pathways in collaboration with networked services.
Education, Training & Research
- Actively participate in teaching and training, including:
Weekly echocardiography teaching meetings.
Resident doctor teaching sessions.
Monthly medical education half-days (audit, M&M, case presentations, journal review).

- Supervise and mentor registrars, fellows and physiologists in imaging and PH.
- Contribute to undergraduate teaching in collaboration with the University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School.
- Lead or participate in audit, service evaluation, and research in imaging and PH, with opportunities for publication and presentation.
Service Development & Leadership
- Provide leadership in developing the Pulmonary Hypertension service to meet national standards.
- Support innovation in cardiac imaging, including structural intervention imaging and service integration with CT and CMR.
- Contribute to rota planning, service development, and workforce optimisation.
- Undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels as appropriate.
Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
- Maintain CPD, appraisal, and revalidation in line with GMC requirements.
- Participate in audit, governance, and quality improvement activities.
- Contribute to policy, guideline development and Trust-wide clinical governance processes.
- Represent the Trust at regional and national forums where appropriate.
