We are looking to appoint an individual who is an outstanding clinician and surgeon. There are many opportunities provided by working in an acute teaching hospital with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, teaching and research, high quality patient experience, top quartile performance in outcomes and efficiency, and good staff morale. In return we expect our consultants to lead by example and use every opportunity to help us improve what we do and strengthen our reputation.
The role is that of a Cardiac Surgeon dealing with all aspects of Adult Cardiac Surgery (with the exception of transplantation and GUCH surgery). We specialise in a wide variety of conditions and pathology and perform a broad range of surgical procedures including minimal access cardiac surgery. We are looking for a surgeon with an interest in helping with the development of our mitral valve surgery programme.
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
To provide a clinical Cardiac Surgical service for patients at the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. As a tertiary service, with referrals coming from District General Hospitals in Sussex and South East England, the delivery of outreach services such as clinics or MDT meetings will be required.
The clinical service consists of all aspects of elective and emergency adult cardiac surgery with the exception of transplantation and congenital (GUCH) surgery.
To participate in clinical and other service activities with the objective of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, audit and research.
To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.
The Sussex Cardiac Centre opened in 1999 and provides a tertiary service for a large area, potentially catering for a population of over 1.5 million, stretching from Chichester and Portsmouth in the West to Hastings in the East and in the North to East Surrey.
We recognise that our service needs additional capacity to provide care for the entirety of our referral base. We have advanced plans for development and growth for the service. In the immediate future, level 3 care for our patients will be moved to a brand new, state of the art facility in the new hospital building. Further expansion in service is planned following this move.
