A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a full time Consultant Anaesthetist based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, part of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust. This is a wonderful opportunity for any new or senior consultant to join our welcoming, friendly well-established team of 25 consultants, 16 SAS Doctors as well as resident doctors,  supporting all general services of the hospital including a busy Emergency Department. You will develop your clinical skills and have opportunity to be involved with leadership, research and audit across all areas of anaesthesia.

As a consultant you will have opportunity to develop special interests in Obstetric Anaesthesia, Paediatrics and Regional Anaesthesia services. Our consultant-led Obstetric services are provided in a dedicated Women’s unit. Other surgical subspecialties include Colorectal, Breast, Endocrine, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Trauma, Maxillo-facial, Ophthalmology, Urology and ENT.

Consultants at Lancaster also provide daytime theatre cover to Westmorland General Hospital, our elective surgical hub. Theatres at Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmoreland General Hospital have recently been fully refurbished.

The Trust comprises 5 sites, of which Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Furness General Hospital offer Intensive Care facilities and emergency departments. These ICUs are covered by a separate resident and consultant team out of hours.

Main duties of the job

  • Assessment and preparation of patients for theatre and provision of peri-operative and immediate post-operative care at Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmorland General Hospital, Kendal.
  • On-call, non-residential cover of emergency theatres and the obstetric unit, supervising two dedicated resident anaesthetists.
  • Contribute to service development in areas of special interest and expertise.
  • Undertake personal appraisal and job-planning as part of revalidation.
  • Satisfy the criteria for revalidation.
  • Demonstrate evidence-based practice where appropriate.
  • Participate in clinical audit, governance and quality improvement.
  • Involvement in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education is strongly encouraged and well supported.
  • Maintain mandatory training requirements.
