We’re offering an exciting opportunity to join our District Nursing team as a Community Phlebotomist. The role involves visiting patients at home to take blood samples, label and transport them, and complete the necessary paperwork. As part of a team, you’ll communicate with patients, their families, and colleagues, showing compassion and empathy at all times.
Some admin tasks are also included, so strong numeracy and literacy skills are important. In return, we offer a thorough induction, training opportunities.
Collect blood samples from housebound patients via venepuncture, making sure they’re labelled correctly before sending them to the lab.
Work independently to support the Community Nursing Team, reporting any concerns or changes in a patient’s condition.
Be an active member of the team and use resources effectively and appropriately.
The role involves correctly identifying patients before taking blood, reporting any discrepancies between request forms and patient details to the GP, registered nurse, sister, or senior sister, and obtaining blood samples from housebound patients via venepuncture for community testing.
It’s important to know the minimum information required on sample bottles and record it clearly, follow the recommended Order of Draw and understand its importance for lab testing, and report any incidents to a manager or trained nurse while taking action to ensure the safety of staff, patients, and carers.
All documentation must be completed in line with HDUHB record-keeping policy, and infection prevention and control measures should be followed at all times.
Awareness of lone worker issues and adherence to the lone worker policy is expected, as is maintaining patient confidentiality.
