Medical Engineering Technician

The Medical Equipment Management Service (MEMS) delivers scientific, engineering, managerial and financial advice to all local healthcare organisations in the correct operation and use of modern medical technologies.

The post holder is primarily concerned with undertaking repair, calibration and planned maintenance to a wide range of medical, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment in the RUH Trust and many other healthcare establishments in the local area, to ensure equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime. Clinical equipment covered incorporates electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer software and medical gas systems. The Post-holder is required to work to high standards of safety and accountability.

The nature of the work contributes towards clinical care in hospitals in primary, community and acute healthcare sectors. The post is part of a team of multi skilled technicians and engineers who support a wide range of clinical equipment. Each member of the team is responsible for the quality of his or her own work. The work of the post holder is central to ensuring that clinical diagnosis and treatment can be delivered in a high technology healthcare environment.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder is responsible for the planned maintenance, service and repairs of broad range of medical devices across the Royal United Hospital and local healthcare services in the community.
  • All work will be carried out in the MEMS workshop, on the wards or in patient areas and local healthcare premises where MEMS has service agreements.  This will involve the use of the MEMS van to travel between sites to carry out maintenance of medical devices. Occasional early/late working may be required to meet the clinical/logistical demands.
  • Full manual UK driving licence is essential.
  • The post holder is expected to plan personal workload and using own initiative to ensure the equipment is working as specified, with minimum disruption to patient services.
  • The post holder will have additional responsibilities to include general MEMS workshop duties and supporting senior technologist/workshop manager as and when required.
