Job overview

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT) is a teaching hospital associated with the University of Warwick Medical School (WMS) and the University of Buckingham Medical School (uBMS).

We are advertising for Clinical Education Fellows to join our medical education team in providing education and training to both medical students and resident doctors.

Main duties of the job

Warwick Medical School has a graduate intake of students and is a four year course which takes account of prior learning and mature learning styles.

Buckingham Medical School is an independent medical school and runs a compressed undergraduate entry course over four and a half years.

Phase I of both courses is taught predominantly in the university setting with students attending a number of bedside teaching sessions within the Trust.  The remainder of both courses is primarily held on placement in Trusts.  Post-holders will therefore be involved in teaching and assessment of students both within the Trust and at the universities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applications from doctors with any speciality background are welcomed, at either junior or senior tier.  There is no requirement to join an on-call rota.  However, the post-holder will be expected to provide some clinical support around any teaching commitments, in particular during periods of student absence in the organisation (eg Christmas and summer holidays) or at times of extreme pressure on the Trust

The post is designed to support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.  Post holders will teach medical students in both the hospital and university settings and will have the opportunity to deliver teaching to doctors in training.  As a result, our education fellows will be involved in teaching a broad range of topics across both universities and at postgraduate level, requiring high levels of flexibility and adaptability.

Medical student teaching varies daily, from bedside teaching for Phase I students through to revision for final year students.  This teaching encompasses small group workshops, lectures and simulation based education amongst others. All teaching materials are provided however development of resources is ongoing throughout the academic year.  The post-holder will need to be able to deliver both planned teaching sessions and also be adaptable to short notice changes to their diary, eg at times of high pressure in the department, sickness of colleagues, or during student revision and exam periods.
