Job overview

This 12 month post is an excellent opportunity for candidates to work as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Medical Education (40%) whilst gaining clinical experience in Emergency Medicine or Intensive Care Medicine (60%) All training will take place at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital hosts students from  the University of Oxford. the University of Southampton and Brunel Medical School, in addition to Physician Associate students from the University of Reading.   These posts have been established to enhance the teaching of students and maintain the Royal Berkshire Hospital’s reputation as a centre of excellence for medical education.  The successful applicant must have a license to practice from the GMC, at least 2 years NHS post-graduate experience and a strong interest in medical education.

40% of the post holder’s time will be spent on Undergraduate teaching activities from Monday to Friday inclusive, with a view to commencing employment on 5th August 2026.

The remaining 60% will be spent doing clinical work to in the Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit.

There are two WTE opportunities providing 6-month rotations (one in ED, one in ICU).

Main duties of the job

Undergraduate Teaching

The post will be tailored to the successful applicant and their specific interests and the roles could include any of the following;

  • Responsibility for facilitating the medical attachments and placements of medical students
  • This will include production of teaching resources and delivery of formal teaching sessions.
  • Helping develop and adapt existing teaching models and courses for medical students
  • Taking on a leadership and mentorship role for medical students and providing a forum to give feedback and help develop and enhance their learning and well being
  • Engage in quality improving projects and developing potential teaching courses.
  • Bedside teaching including demonstration of clinical signs and examination
  • Coordinating student timetabling
  • Contribute to running and developing simulation sessions for Medical Students and liaising with the department of Simulation.
  • Assisting the Undergraduate Managers in delivering key medical student inductions

We encourage development of teaching skills and also publication of work and projects.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Emergency Medicine

The job will take place in the Royal Berkshire Hospital Emergency Department

Emergency Medicine is at the heart of the hospital’s emergency care pathway and provides innovative and high quality care for patients from the moment they arrive at the hospital. It is a consultant led service with consultants providing leadership and patient care on the ‘shop floor’ 08:00-00:00 7 days a week. There is a strong commitment to ensure the ED is appropriately resourced to deliver high quality and timely emergency care. The trust has been and continues to be very supportive of the developments that are taking place to address the pressures resulting from increased emergency admissions and a greater acuity of cases which present.

You will join a team of ED doctors on the resident doctor/SHO tier. You will have the opportunity to manage a wide range of presentations in all age groups including children. You will be strongly supported through this by consultant and middle grade presence. We have 24 hour middle grade cover, and night shifts are staffed by at least 6 doctors.

Intensive Care Medicine

The Royal Berkshire ICU has 25 beds with over 1000 admissions per year. Our consultants work a weekly rota that includes a two consultants on duty during the day and a third consultant for extra supervision and teaching of our trainees and medical students on Tuesdays. The 16 trainees attached to the unit work a full time rota, with two on at night. We also train 4 trainee advanced critical care practitioners (tACCPs). The unit has a bespoke local training programme mapped to the ICU curriculum and adapted for students and trainees of all levels and experience. Teaching session include the use of in situ simulation to enhance experiential learning and foster teamwork.
