Main duties of the job

  • Managing and supporting the Outpatients team to ensure delivery of safe, high quality nursing care
  • Managing the provision of the high standard of care in outpatients in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Developing the outpatient’s service in conjunction with the Outpatient Manager and multidisciplinary team, in line with the Trusts Strategy.
  • Providing professional leadership to outpatients nursing teams ensuring an environment of empowerment through teaching and facilitation.
  • Facilitating organisational change and service improvement in line with Trust vision and strategy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council, Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies including adherence to the Trust Values and behaviors.
  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
  • A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development. The post holder will deputise in the absence of the clinic manager and will be responsible for the management of the team in their absence.
  • Support the management of clinical and operational processes within the Outpatients department, liaising with members of the Multidisciplinary Teams of all groups involved. Identifying areas of service improvement and implementing improvements with the team using UHCWi methodology. Leading the service as an autonomous practitioner, providing a high standard of care to the patient group.
  • Manage clinics to ensure that relevant documentation and results are available for each patient’s visit, ensuring the smooth running of the clinics. Ensure patient information is up to date and acting as patient advocate where necessary.
  • Organisation of and participation in cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, sickness management, resourcing, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical clinical skills, to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient monitoring, wound management, medicines management, safeguarding procedures, and equipment maintenance - acting as a resource and role model for junior staff.
  • Develop and educate staff and students, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required. Monitoring mandatory training compliance of self and others to ensure it is completed in a timely   manner.
  • Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to  patient dependency/clinical need.
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g., imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Support the PALs and Complaints process; be able to deescalate patient concerns and complaints at the time of incidents or escalate if unable to find resolutions.
  • Investigate incidents in the department and take appropriate action using the DATIX reporting system to record findings and learning outcomes.
